Hop.Earth Car Not Spawning: Check You Actually Landed First
Before you blame a key: when we tested this ourselves, the character kept freezing 2,000 metres up, and nothing worked in that state — not X, not F, not even real keyboard input on W. Find out whether you are on the ground before you troubleshoot anything else.
Play Hop.Earth →Start here, in this order
1. Work out whether you have actually landed. If you are still under the parachute — or hanging perfectly still in mid-air — no key does anything at all. That is the state a lot of "F does nothing" reports are really describing.
2. If you are stuck in the air, reload hop.earth and rejoin. There is no key that gets you out of it. Reloading and taking a fresh session is the only lever you have.
3. Only once you are standing on a loaded road, do what the game's own prompt tells you: hold X to summon a vehicle, let it settle, then press F to drive (G to ride as a passenger).
Step 3 is what the in-game help screen says — but two players who got further than we did report that it doesn't behave that way, and we could not verify it ourselves. The next section lays out all three sources side by side, because pretending this is settled would be dishonest.
Why "F does nothing": three sources, and they don't agree
This is comfortably the most common complaint about Hop.Earth, and every confident answer you'll read online — including the one this page used to give — rests on a single source. There are three, they point in different directions, and it is worth seeing all of them before you decide what's wrong with your game.
1. What the game itself says
The game's own help screen (hold H) and its on-screen prompts split one action across two keys:
| Key | What the in-game text says it does |
|---|---|
| X (held, on foot) | "Hold X to summon a vehicle" — by the game's own wording, this is the key that creates a car. |
| F | "Press F to drive" — enter or exit a car. On this reading it has nothing to act on until a car exists. |
| G | "G to get in as a passenger" — climb into an existing car without taking the wheel. |
That is documentation, not observed behaviour. It tells you what the interface intends, which is not automatically what happens on your screen.
2. What players who got further than us report
On Hacker News, two people who had the game running described something else entirely. The thread's original poster:
"Then press F until the car appears. only enter when it stops."
And a second player, directly contradicting the help text:
"Holding X to summon a vehicle does not seem to work"
One says repeated F presses are what makes a car appear. The other says holding X does nothing. Neither matches the in-game prompt. Both of them, note, agree on one thing: wait for the car to stop moving before you get in.
3. What we measured ourselves
On 8 August 2026 we logged into a real account and tried three times to settle this. We never got to answer the question — because the character never landed. Rather than judge by eye, we read the game's own internal player state directly.
- Attempt 1 — default Monte Carlo spawn. More than 55 seconds hanging under the parachute. Three screenshots taken 10 seconds apart were essentially identical: same pose, same background. No sign of descent.
- Attempt 2 — flat ground at Port Hercule (43.7342, 7.4253), chosen to rule out awkward mountain terrain. The player object reported
spawned: true, frozen: false, vehicle: null, and a position of Y = 2000 m. We sampled altitude every half-second for four seconds: 1999.9 m, eight times running. Not slow descent — zero descent. - Every input was dead in that state. Holding X for 3 seconds, pressing F twelve times, holding W for 2 seconds: altitude, state, vehicle and seat never changed once. To rule out the game simply ignoring scripted events, we then sent real browser-level keypresses — twenty presses of W. Position before:
x=1060, y=2000, z=-433. Position after:x=1060, y=2000, z=-433. - Attempt 3 — a busy community room with genuine lap records on it. It never connected at all:
Reconnecting…and nothing more. The developers label that whole block (UNSTABLE) themselves.
So what can we actually claim?
We cannot tell you that holding X summons a car, because we were never in a position to test it. We also cannot tell you that it doesn't.
What we can tell you is that there is a state where your character sits at spawn height and every single input is ignored — and from the player's side that is indistinguishable from "the controls are broken". Someone stuck in it who mashes F comes away certain that F is dead. Someone stuck in it who holds X comes away certain that X is dead. The two contradictory reports above are exactly what that would sound like.
That's also why the first thing on this page is "check you landed" rather than "press this key instead".
None of which means the game is broken for everyone — it clearly isn't. The public race list carries real recorded runs: 186.34 km/h top speed on one route, 281.31 km/h on another, averages around 97 km/h. People are driving. Read the freeze as a lottery you can lose — we lost it twice in three tries — not as a game that never works.
With all that on the table, here is the sequence we'd actually follow from a cold start:
- Get into a lobby with ground under you. Under OFFICIAL there's a lobby called "Start Here!" in single player mode, which drops you into Monte Carlo. The COMMUNITY list below it is labelled UNSTABLE by the developers, and the one we tried refused to connect — a dead room is another way to end up with no car.
- Check whether you are descending at all. Watch the ground for ten seconds. Real terrain loading makes you fall slowly; the frozen state makes you not fall at all. That distinction decides everything that follows.
- Frozen in the air? Reload the page and rejoin. No key rescues you from it, so don't spend three minutes cycling through the keyboard the way we did.
- Landed? Let the world finish building. Roads and intersections are generated on your own machine in real time from map data. Give a fresh area a few seconds before you touch anything.
- Then follow the in-game prompt: hold X, wait, press F. Held, not tapped — a tap does something different once you're driving. If holding X gets you nowhere, the Hacker News advice is to press F repeatedly instead; both accounts agree you should only get in once the car has stopped moving. Once you're driving, hold J to hop over broken road geometry.
Still no car? Work down this list
Five things account for essentially every remaining case, and the order matters — the first one makes the other four impossible to diagnose.
You never touched down — you're frozen at spawn height
"I'm floating and nothing responds."
Until your character is standing on generated ground, no control does anything, so every other item on this list is untestable. And in our own testing this wasn't a slow descent that needed patience — it was a hard stop.
Reading the game's internal player state directly, we found the character sitting at Y = 2000 m, the spawn altitude, with spawned: true and frozen: false. Sampled every half-second for four seconds, the altitude came back 1999.9 m every time — zero metres of descent. Holding X, pressing F a dozen times and holding W changed nothing, and neither did twenty real keyboard presses of W sent at browser level: the position was x=1060, y=2000, z=-433 before and after, unmoved.
How to tell: watch the ground for ten seconds. If it is getting closer, the terrain is just loading and you should wait. If nothing is changing at all, you are stuck.
What to do: reload hop.earth and rejoin. There is no key that recovers from this state — we tried the keyboard exhaustively and got nothing. Fair warning: it can happen again on the next session, so this is a retry, not a cure. More on the difference between a slow fall and a frozen one on the not loading page.
There's no road loaded to put a car on
"Nothing happens no matter what I press."
This is the one that looks least like a loading issue and often is. Every road and intersection in Hop.Earth is generated on your device in real time from OpenStreetMap data as you travel — the developers openly acknowledge "there's still some jank when approaching the next tile". The summon is a request to place a vehicle on a road; the game client's own internal vehicle states carry names like vehicleSummonToRoad and vehicleResetToNearestRoad. No road surface built yet means no valid destination. Wait for the terrain, or move toward an area that has finished generating. If the world never resolves at all, that's a separate problem — see Hop.Earth not loading.
You tapped X instead of holding it
"I pressed X and nothing came."
The game's wording is literal: hold X. A tap is a different command — while you're in a car, tapping X resets the vehicle. On foot with no car around, a tap has nothing to act on. So if you've been tapping, hold the key down for a full second or two instead. Worth being straight with you, though: this follows from the interface text, not from anything we were able to watch happen, and at least one player reports that even a proper hold does nothing for them.
You tried to get in while the car was still moving
"The car spawned, but F still does nothing."
This is the one point where the in-game text and the player reports actually agree, which makes it the most trustworthy item on the page. A vehicle arrives with physics running, and until it has come to rest it isn't something you can climb into — the Hacker News poster who got a car put it as bluntly as possible: "only enter when it stops." Watch the car, wait for it to stop bouncing or rolling, then press F.
The car did spawn — it's just night where you are
"Everything is black. There's no car."
Hop.Earth runs on real-world time, so dropping into a city where it is currently the middle of the night gets you a genuinely dark world. Testing this in Monte Carlo, the screen was almost entirely black on arrival — local time was night, and the terrain hadn't finished loading on top of that. Before you decide the summon failed, use the world map on M and move somewhere on the daylight side of the planet, then try again.
The car spawned but it's stuck, flipped or sinking
Getting the car is only half the battle, because the roads themselves are still a unfinished project. The developers put a number on it: roughly 95% of roads and intersections render correctly, but many intersections are still broken. Fixing one broken intersection tends to fix a lot of others at once, and the stated long-term target is 99.99% — but today, you will hit bad geometry.
There are three recovery keys, and using the wrong one wastes time:
| Situation | Key | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Flipped onto the roof, or wedged | X tap | Resets the car in place — the fastest fix for a simple rollover. |
| Fell off the world, or ended up somewhere hopeless | X hold | Returns you to the road. Use this when a plain reset just drops you back into the same hole. |
| Caught on a broken intersection | J hold | Jumps the car over the broken geometry. Tapped, J is nitro; held, it's a hop. |
That last one is the official answer, and it comes with a joke attached: the developers point out that holding J to jump over broken geometry "makes sense, because the game is called Hop.Earth". The name isn't about hopping between countries. It's about hopping over the parts of the planet that haven't been fixed yet.
Reflex order: J if you're merely snagged, tap X if you're upside down, hold X if you're truly lost. The full key list is on the Hop.Earth controls page.
Questions people ask right after this one
How do you get a car in Hop.Earth?
Land first — none of it works in the air. Once you're standing on a loaded road, the in-game prompt says to hold X to summon a vehicle and then press F to get in. If holding X does nothing for you, you're not alone; some players report pressing F repeatedly until a car turns up instead.
Why does F do nothing in Hop.Earth?
Two possibilities, and they need different fixes. Either there's no car nearby yet — F is described in-game as the enter/exit key, so it would have nothing to act on — or your character is frozen in the air, in which case every key does nothing and the key you press is irrelevant. Check which one you're in before changing anything.
Is the car spawn broken?
We can't say for certain, and anyone who tells you they can is going beyond the evidence. What we can say is that we never once reached a state where summoning could be tested: across three sessions the character either froze at 2,000 m or the room wouldn't connect. Hop.Earth is openly early access — the developers tell players to "expect still-evolving mechanics, and lots of bugs". Plenty of people clearly do get driving, so this isn't universal.
How long should I hold X?
A second or two, going by the game's own wording, and keep watching after you release — a vehicle still has to arrive and settle before F will do anything. If several attempts change nothing at all, stop pressing keys and check whether you actually landed.
I'm stuck in the air and no key works. What now?
Reload hop.earth and rejoin. We tested this state directly: with the character pinned at spawn altitude, neither scripted input nor genuine keyboard presses moved it a single metre. A fresh session is the only option, though it may freeze again — ours did.
Can someone else's car be used?
Yes. In a shared session, G puts you into an existing car as a passenger rather than taking the wheel.
