Is Hop.Earth Free? Yes — Behind an Account Wall, With an Optional Topup
Playing costs nothing. What stands between you and the game is a sign-up form, not a checkout — and the money side, a Topup panel plus a donation banner, is voluntary support for development rather than a paywall.
Play Hop.Earth →The Short Answer
Hop.Earth is free. It runs in the browser at hop.earth with no download, no purchase and, as far as we have seen from inside a logged-in account, no content locked behind payment. The developers' own framing, in the official text inside the game's TOPUP panel, is that early adopters "can already play and enjoy all the features" while the game is still being developed.
So the honest answer to "what does Hop.Earth cost?" is: not money. It costs you an email address, because there is an account wall in front of the game, and it costs you some tolerance, because this is openly an early-access project — the same official text tells players to expect unfinished, still-evolving mechanics and "lots of bugs that you can report if you want". Both of those are worth understanding before you click through, so the rest of this page walks through the sign-up, the Topup, and the payment methods we actually saw.
The Account Wall: What You Hand Over Before You Play
When we registered, the front page asked for a nickname, an email address, a password, and a captcha. That was the whole form — no payment step anywhere in it. There was no guest mode or "try without an account" option on the front page at the time of our check, so the account is genuinely a wall, not a suggestion.
A few practical consequences of that, stated neutrally:
- You can't try before registering. There is no anonymous demo mode. If you just want thirty seconds of "is this for me?", the sign-up form is still the price of admission.
- Invite links don't bypass it. Multiplayer sessions hand out a link in the form
hop.earth/?server=XXXXX, and it's a great way to pull friends into your exact world — but a friend clicking it still needs their own account first. Worth knowing before you share a link promising instant chaos; the race creation guide covers how those session links work. - The email appears to be for the account itself. We can only report what the form asked for, not what the developers do with it — for that, read the official site's own pages.
One caveat that applies to this whole page: Hop.Earth changes fast. A guest mode could appear, the form could change. Everything here describes what we personally went through to make the account this site's testing runs on — the about page explains that verification habit — and if you hit something different, the game's current front page outranks us.
What TOPUP Actually Is
Once you're logged in, there's a TOPUP button in the lower-left of the screen. Opening it is the closest thing Hop.Earth has to a store, and it's nothing like a game store: it's a voluntary top-up for people who want to support development, payable by card, PayPal or Ethereum. The positioning is explicit — early supporters put money in because they want the project to keep going, not because anything in the game demands it. We played, built a race and flew around without ever paying.
The Topup panel is also the game's most honest changelog
Oddly, the TOPUP panel is where the developers keep their frankest status report. It's the official source for most of the load-bearing facts on this site: worldwide terrain at a 30 m grid with France and Spain (and their islands) at up to 2 m — the reason our where-to-drive recommendations look the way they do — roughly 95% of roads and intersections rendering correctly, holding J to hop the car over broken geometry, and the plain statement that the game is currently free roam, with racing and GPS navigation still on the way. Even if you never pay a cent, the panel is worth opening just to read it.
Every Way Money Enters the Game
Across a logged-in session, we saw exactly two places where Hop.Earth mentions money, and both are opt-in:
| Where | What it is | Payment methods shown |
|---|---|---|
| TOPUP panel | In-game top-up button, lower-left after login. Voluntary support for development. | Card · PayPal · Ethereum |
| Donation banner | A banner on the official site reading "Help make Hop.Earth happen and donate now!" | PayPal · Visa · Mastercard · Amex |
No price tags on cars, no premium regions, no energy timers, nothing consumable that we ran into. If you've played free browser games before, the absence is noticeable.
So When Would You Actually Pay?
When you want to. That's not evasion — it's the model. The game is playable in full for free while it's being built, and the Topup exists so that people who like where it's going can fund the building. What you're supporting is visible every time you play: an engine that generates a drivable planet from OpenStreetMap roads and satellite elevation data, on your own device, in real time.
Two honest notes before you put money in. First, this is support for a project in development, not a purchase of a finished product — the developers themselves are upfront that mechanics are still evolving and bugs are plentiful, and our own testing backs that up: our first session froze at spawn height before we ever got a car on the road. Second, we're an unofficial guide describing what we saw on a given date; for current terms, prices or anything contractual, the only source that counts is the official site itself.
Questions People Ask
Is Hop.Earth free to play?
Yes. It runs in the browser with nothing to buy and nothing to download. The TOPUP button and the donation banner are both voluntary ways to support development, and neither gates any content we've encountered.
Do I need an account to play Hop.Earth?
Yes, currently. The front page asks for a nickname, email, password and a captcha before letting you in, and there was no guest mode when we registered.
Can I play without giving an email address?
Not that we found. Email was a required field on the sign-up form at the time of our check. If that changes, the front page of hop.earth will show it before any guide does.
What does the Topup actually buy?
As far as we've seen, nothing is locked without it — the official framing is that all features are already playable for free and the Topup is early-supporter funding for continued development.
Can I pay with cryptocurrency?
The Topup panel lists Ethereum alongside card and PayPal. The donation banner on the site shows PayPal, Visa, Mastercard and Amex.
Is there a download, an app or a Steam version?
Everything we've tested runs directly in a desktop web browser at hop.earth. On phones there are touch controls, but terrain is generated on your device in real time, which is demanding — the controls page covers the touch layout.
