How to Play Hop.Earth: the Complete First-Session Walkthrough

Every screen between you and your first drive, in order: the account form, the one lobby worth joining, the map, the 2,000 m drop, the car, and your first race β€” plus the trap waiting at each step. All of it from actually playing; where the evidence is disputed, this page says so.

What You're Signing Up For

Hop.Earth generates a drivable version of the real world on your own machine, in real time, from OpenStreetMap road data and satellite elevation data. The developers are open about where it stands: early adopters can play everything now, but should expect unfinished, still-evolving mechanics and "lots of bugs". Their own description of the current gameplay is blunt β€” "Currently it's free roam. Drive anywhere you want." Structured racing and GPS navigation are still on the devs' roadmap, not in the game.

So set expectations accordingly: you're dropping into an evolving sandbox where the world itself β€” roads, intersections, tunnels, with physics β€” is the star. Knowing which rough edges are normal is most of this guide's job.

Step 1: The Account Form

There's no guest mode β€” you register before you play. The form asks for a nickname, email address and password, plus a type-what-you-see captcha ("Are you human? Type the characters") and one optional oddity: a question asking whether you're a streamer or YouTuber, with answers no / sometimes / YES.

The game is free. You'll see a TOPUP screen offering card, PayPal and Ethereum payments β€” that's optional early-supporter funding, not a paywall, and the full breakdown is on the is it free page.

Step 2: Join the Official Lobby β€” Not the Shiny Ones

After logging in you get a server list with two blocks. Under OFFICIAL sits LOBBY β€” "Start Here!" by adminman, running in single player mode with a ping readout. Below it, the COMMUNITY block holds player-created race rooms with live player counts β€” and a label the developers attached themselves: (UNSTABLE).

They're not being modest: in our session some community rooms simply showed down, and the busy one we joined β€” seven players online β€” returned Reconnecting… and never let us in. Learn the game in the official lobby; visit the community rooms later.

Step 3: The Map and HOP HERE

The lobby opens on a world map, centred by default on Monte Carlo, Monaco β€” that default is why the public race list is full of routes around 43.73, 7.42. You can drive anywhere, though: pan and zoom to the place you want, click it, and hit HOP HERE.

One warning from our testing: the Go to search box is not reliable β€” we searched a real street, selected the autocomplete suggestion, and the map stayed parked on Monaco. Click your destination directly on the map instead. When choosing, remember the game runs on real-world local time (a city in its night is genuinely dark), and that France and Spain plus their islands get the sharpest terrain, up to a 2 m grid β€” ideas on the where to drive page.

Step 4: Land. Actually Land.

This step silently kills more first sessions than anything else. You drop in from 2,000 m under a parachute, and there are two very different ways that can go slowly. Slow descent means the terrain below you is still being generated β€” wait it out. No descent at all means you're stuck, and we've measured what that looks like: on one drop the character sat at 1999.9 m across eight altitude samples β€” zero movement β€” while holding X, pressing F twelve times, and even twenty real browser-level presses of W changed nothing. In that state no key works, and it's indistinguishable from "the controls are broken".

The most experienced player account we've found, from the Hacker News thread on the game, says the same thing:

"It's very buggy. A full reload helps. Don't press too many buttons until you land. Then press F until the car appears. only enter when it stops."

The ten-second rule

After you hop in, watch the ground for ten seconds. Getting closer, even slowly? Wait. Not moving at all? Reload the page and rejoin β€” nothing you press will fix it, so don't spend three minutes cycling the keyboard like we did. The full measurements are on the car not spawning page, and the loading-versus-frozen distinction is on the not loading page.

Step 5: Get a Car and Drive

Once you're genuinely on the ground, the game's help screen says: hold X to summon a vehicle, then press F to drive (or G to ride as a passenger). Honest footnote: that's the help screen's wording, some players report it not behaving that way, and we couldn't verify it ourselves because our test drops never landed. If holding X does nothing, the player-reported fallback is pressing F repeatedly β€” and both camps agree: only get in once the car has stopped moving.

On the road, the essentials:

KeyWhat it does
W A S DDrive (arrow keys work too)
Shift / AltMore / less engine power
SpaceHandbrake / kickflip
JNitro; hold to jump the car
XTap to reset the car; hold to return to the road

That hold-J jump is not a party trick β€” it's the official answer to the game's most documented flaw. Around 95% of roads and intersections render correctly, which means the rest are broken, and when your car snags on bad geometry the developers' own advice is to hold J and hop over it. It's where the game gets its name. The complete key list, including weapons and the helicopter, is in the full controls guide β€” and the game documents itself too: hold H in game to open the built-in help screen and check any key on this page.

Step 6: Build Your First Race

Even with structured racing still on the devs' roadmap, the route-builder works today, and it's the best way to give a session a shape. From the official lobby:

  1. Open the map and find a stretch of road you like β€” our test route was on Monaco's waterfront.
  2. Click Create a race.
  3. Click your starting point. A green START marker drops.
  4. Click your finish. A red FINISH marker drops, and the game traces the route between them along the real road network.
  5. Read the route panel. Ours reported: Length 1.82 km, Weather Very good, Surface Asphalt, Elevation 42 m, Start street Quai Antoine 1er β€” yes, it knows the real street name.
  6. Pick a button: Start Race, Share race, or Reset Race.

Don't be discouraged that most public race entries show a top speed of 0.00 β€” routes get drawn far more often than they get raced, which fits a game where racing isn't formally wired up yet. The deeper walkthrough is on the race creation page.

Bring a friend

In a session, the bottom of the screen shows an invite link β€” hop.earth/?server=XXXXX β€” with a COPY button. Each session gets its own code, and the link drops friends straight into your world. T opens chat; Tab shows the round's scoreboard.

Questions People Ask

Is Hop.Earth free to play?

Yes. You need an account (nickname, email, password, captcha), but no payment β€” the TOPUP and donation options are voluntary support for development.

Do I need to download anything?

No. It runs entirely in the browser at hop.earth β€” no installer on desktop, no app on mobile.

How do I get a car?

First confirm you've actually landed β€” nothing works while you're stuck at spawn height. Then the help screen says hold X to summon and F to drive; some players instead report pressing F repeatedly. Only enter once the car has stopped.

Why is everything pitch black?

The game runs on real-world local time. If it's night at your chosen location, it's night in the game β€” move to the daylight side of the planet or wait it out.

Can I race other people?

You can build and share routes today, and community race rooms exist β€” but the developers say the game is currently free roam, with structured racing and GPS navigation still on the way. That's why most public race entries show a 0.00 top speed.

How long should landing take?

You drop from 2,000 m, so give it time β€” but if your altitude hasn't visibly changed after ten seconds, you're in the frozen state and only a reload helps.
